Abraham is tested and his concern as father (Jan 21)

Here, God tests Abraham.  Why does God test?  God tests to give us an opportunity for our faith and trust in Him to grow.  What an opportunity for Abraham to show his faith in action.  He starts by saying "Here I am."  How often do we run and hide when God calls us?  Contrast God's test, as a means for growth with Satan's temptation, as a means for decline and decay.

Isaac (name means laughter), Abraham's "only son" is desired by God for sacrifice.  Abraham realizes for 3 days that his son is dead (or will be).  Can you imagine the trust of Abraham in God on that three day trek from Beersheba (southern Israel) to the area of Mount Moriah (Jerusalem)?  Think of Abraham's relief when God substituted the ram for Isaac in sacrifice.  Do you see the clear parallel between the plight of Isaac as a sacrifice and Jesus; God's only son, dead for 3 days, substitutionary sacrifice for our sin, and the location of sacrifice are only a few parallels here.

Because of Abraham's show of unfailing faith, God restates His blessing on Abraham.  Do you have any ideas about the outcome if Abraham had answered...No, that was not part of the deal...I can't do THAT.  I suspect the account would be greatly different.  How does your faith show?

Sarah then dies, Abraham wants to pay the  "full price" for Sarah's tomb.  Who paid the full price for us?

Abraham cares for his son and wishes a proper wife.  The chief servant is sent back to Abraham's home country to find a bride and not a bride from the Canaanites.

The servant prayed about his task, asked the Lord to show him the woman of the Lord's choosing, Rebekah (perhaps meaning cow).  Rebekah chooses to go and receives a blessing, and becomes Isaac's wife.

Some attributes of God seen here are:

Power
Provision
Order
Complete

What is your attitude when undergoing a test of or from God?

Are you thankful the full price has been paid for you?  Does your thankfulness show?

Do you pray for your children and the selection of a mate?

Thank the Lord for this day.

In Christ
