Laws and Promised Obedience (Feb 9)

Here we have laws, some are brutal:
"Do not allow a sorceress to live."

Some laws reflect honesty and courtesy:
"Do not accept a bribe,
Do not spread false reports,
Do not oppress an alien."

Some laws direct worship:
"Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,
The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning,
Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me."

Some laws cover respect for God and govenment.
"Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people"

God promises an angel to go ahead of Israel and to wipe out the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites. Worship the Lord and receive his blessing; no one barron, no miscarriages, a full live span.

People promise obedience, "Everything the Lord said, we will do;" altars are built, fellowship offerings given.  Moses goes up to the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

The background hills are in Southern Israel.  One might imagine that terrain in Sinai had a similiar appearance.

Thoughts:

What feelings do you have as you read the laws?

Do you sense God's care and compassion for the community?

Could you, by yourself, do everything commanded?

Pray for community in our churches.

In Christ,

David P
