Plumb (Sept 9)

Who despises the day of small things?  Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
                                                  Zechariah 4:10 NIV

Be thankful for days of small things, for small things provide for much meaning in our lives.  Small things; a child's first word or step, comfort given over a skinned knee, a birthday party, a gathering of friends for dinner, completing a craft project, attending worship, a goodnight kiss, bringing your spouse a morning cup of coffee, and an average day at work are all examples of small everyday events that go into joys of daily living and do not make up a despised day.

The building of the temple is not a small thing, but small things go into temple building.  A plumb line is one of those things that Zerubbabel used in temple building.

The word plumb has many meanings; to adjust to make vertical, to examine in great depth, to measure the depth of something, exactly, and completely are used to define 'plumb.'

We can compare our lives against God's word, a word that provides instruction for our life.  God's word then, in a sense, could be considered a plumb line for our life.  In considering all the things we did that we perhaps should not have done and all the things we did not do that we perhaps should have done, we can give thanks that God provided another plumb line in Jesus Christ to direct and guide our lives and through His love and sacrifice, our being out of plumb is forgiven and we are made plumb.

What kinds of feelings do you notice when your life is out of plumb?

How are you thankful that Jesus made you plumb?

Pray that you can see the plumb line in your life daily.

In Christ,

David P
