Tools (July 12)

Does the axe raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boat against him who uses it?  As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club brandish him who is not wood!
                                          Isaiah 10:15 NIV

We read of the Lord's words predicting Assyria's demise for its assault on Jerusalem.  Assyria, under King Sennacherib was carrying out the Lord's wrath against many cities and states.  We read of Calno, Carchemish, Hamath, Arpad, Samaria and Damascus all fell to Assyria as Sennacherib carried out God's judgement.

When Sennacherib compared Jerusalem to all of the other principalities he had conquered, and turned his armies upon Jerusalem, Sennacherib got out of God's will and into his will, as a result, he failed.

The Lord speaks of four tools an axe, saw, rod and club and asks the question if the tool can be more important than the holder of the tool?

Sennacherib, in his conquests was victorious while he was a tool of the Lord.  When he followed his own will, and exited the Lord's will by attacking Jerusalem, he failed.  Likewise, when we are in the Lord's will in our daily walk, struggles and conflicts, we will be supported, encouraged, protected and be successful in the Lord's work.  It is when we put our wills ahead of God's will by not following the Spirit, by selfish pride, or for some other reason that we, like Sennacherib fail.

Remember the Creator of the Universe has a grand plan for all to bring glory to Him.  The Lord will use all; even Sennacherib; even tools like you and me, to bring glory to Him.

How do you seek to discern the Lord's will for you?

How do you consider yourself to be a tool of God in your daily activities?

How does Isaiah chapter 10 illustrate God's sovereign nature over kings, over Sennacherib?

Pray to have eyes open to the Spirit's guidance, and the provision of strength, courage, and wisdom to follow.

In Christ,

David P
