Under What? (June 9)

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.  I have seen something else under the sun:  The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.
                              Ecclesiastes 9:10-11 NIV

In the book of Ecclesiastes, it is said, "Meaningless, meaningless...everything is meaningless."  Hally's Bible Commentary teaches that God is mentioned in Ecclesiastes at least 40 times, more frequently than vanity or meaningless/meaninglessness!  Even the book of Ecclesiastes turns focus from man's short life to the eternal God.

Today's verses encourage us to do our work with vigor.  Work is a gift from God, a source of blessing and hopefully a source of enjoyment.  The items that make up work are not present in the grave, so do your best now.  With our faith in Christ, we are assured that the grave is not the final place we are going, for we are not under the sun; but rather under the "Son."

Certainly we have seen how God can work his plan through the weak, infirm, and the slow.  The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, for God does have a hand in all we do.  With God's hand and guidance in our lives and activities, we should as we are told in Hebrews 12 to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangels, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

What kinds of activities do people do under the sun that they do not do under the Son?

How can others see that you are under the Son and not the sun?

Are you running the race without hinderance?

Pray for the Spirit to illuminate dark areas, under the sun, in your life and to give you the courage to change to living fully by grace through faith a life under the Son.

Pray for peace, guidance and protection from the evil one for all members of the Church.

In Christ

David P
