Garments (April 8)

"I am your servant Ruth," she said.  "Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman redeemer.

So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife...she gave birth to a son.

The women said to Naomi:  "Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer."

...And they named him Obed.  He was the father of Jesse, the father of David...

...But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord closed her womb.

And she made a vow, saying, "O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, them I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life and no razor will ever be used on his head."

Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son.  She named him Samuel....So now, I give him to the Lord.  For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.

More faith in action here.  A garment corner is used here as a focus of a relationship.  Do you have any shirt or coat tail relatives?  The garment or garment corner is used several times in scripture to show relationships and respect.  Think of: Jesus' command not to keep a garment overnight, wearing sackcloth, or being a sign of wealth.

Think of the meaning of small pieces of a garment in the relationship between David and Saul at En Gidi (Hebrew for small goat) where David cut a small piece of Saul's garment to show Saul that David could have killed Saul while Saul slept in the cave.

Think of the touching of Jesus' garment by the woman with the hemorrhage, how Jesus knew he was touched and how the woman was healed.

Think of the garment corner, where tassels are attached to the garment to remind the Jews of God's law.

Think how in Ezekiel 16:8, God spread the corner of his garment over Israel and entered into a covenant with Israel.

And here in Ruth the Garment corner to signify the kinsman-redeemer relationship.

Even today we use garments to signify relationships in military, police, profession, likes, and even in incarceration or slavery.

What kind of garments do you have in your closet?  Are there any that give you special contentedness or discontentedness?

Are there any that need to be washed and made clean by the blood of Jesus?

Pray for guidance into wearing the appropriate garments for the day.

In Christ,

David P
