but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
Mark 4:19 NIV
We read of Jesus telling us, in this parable, of some individuals, who like seeds sown among thorns, hear the word; but the word is choked out by weeds of this life, and as a result, is unfruitful.
For us to be effective, we need to have our eyes open to the Spirit. We need to follow the Spirit as we live our lives at work, home and in our communities. The Spirit will guide us to serve, to worship, to praise, to fellowship and to other places.
We need not worry about the past, or future; for Christ has gone ahead and prepared a place for us. As a result, we should let the Spirit direct our attention to Growth in the Spirit, to becoming more Christlike and to bring glory to God the Father.
Placing our hope in weeds like; ourselves, our families, our work, our wealth, our friendships, our possessions, is in fact a form of idol worship. Anything that removes God, Jesus and the work of the Spirit from holding all of your hope is an idol. Idols are weeds and do separate us from God's perfect will and as a result, "choke the word."
What kinds of things, or weeds, can choke the word in a person's life?
Are there weeds in your life that the Spirit needs to show you and give you the strength, courage and wisdom to remove them from your life?
Pray for the Spirit's moment to moment guidance in your life.
In Christ,
David P
