The king stood up, tore his clothes and lay down on the ground; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn.
2 Samuel 13:31 NIV
The above verse describes King David's action immediately after he received the bad news of Absalom killing all of David's sons. Not one left. We continue to see the sword has not departed from David's home and will not depart from David's home as the Lord proclaimed to David via Nathan in 2 Samuel 12:10.
Sometimes when we receive unwelcome bad news of death, disease, disaster or war the only response we can muster is anguish. David today shows his anguish by tearing his clothing and lying on the ground. Not one son left!
During those times of anguish, comfort is often found in the ones standing by us; in community, in friendships, and in other relationships. David's servants share his burden in their response of standing by and tearing their own clothes, they do not depart and look after their own interests during David's great loss. In troubled times, community is such a gift.
Think of our God who gave us the gift of His Son. That Son was pierced and wounded for our transgressions and iniquities to work God's plan of salvation, for there was not one of us who could. In addition, there is not one of us he did not suffer for. Do not forget the worldwide community of believers in Christ who are all different parts of one body with different gifts and tasks to tell the good news of great joy!
We can find strength, peace, comfort and even joy in being united together by the Spirit who can intercede for us when we are unable to find the words to describe our feelings, situation, or anguish.
What can you share with the Lord to lighten your burden?
How do you show that all are important in the Lord's sight?
Give thanks and praise for the gifts, salvation and eternal life you have received through Chirst.
In Christ,
David P
