As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the Living God. Where can I go and meet with God?
Psalm 42:1-2 NIV
A photo of the Banias waterfall in Dan, northern Israel, is above. This waterfall has been said to be the stream of water that David referenced in Psalm 42. David's thirst for the Lord is deep and David feels no particular closeness to God; if fact, David feels forgotten by the God, the Rock.
Remember, David lived before Pentecost, before the Holy Spirit was sealed in believers. As a result, we today do not have the ability to Fully experience the separation that David perhaps felt from the Spirit as he wrote Psalm 42.
We are sealed with the indwelling Holy Spirit and we are, in contrast to David, able to approach God with our sin removed via our faith and belief in Christ's work on the cross and his resurrection at any time, through prayer.
As we read the Psalms, remember how they are excellent examples of how to talk with God and how to pray.
What kind of things could you do to improve your prayer life? Think of several and write them down and try to adapt those things into your life.
Pray for the Spirit to guide you to a better prayer life.
In Christ,
David P
